What drives the price of gold?
Gold pays no interest and no dividend, so its price is set by trust — in paper money and in the future. Over long horizons four forces do most of the work: how fast money is created relative to inflation, the real interest rate, central-bank buying, and investor demand.
When real rates are high, holding cash actually earns you something, and gold — which pays nothing — costs you the return you gave up. When rates are low or negative, that logic flips. And when money is created much faster than goods and services, each unit buys less; assets that can't be printed, like gold, tend to catch up to that sooner or later.
No single indicator is enough on its own: the same inflation rate can coexist with very different gold prices depending on rates and demand. The combination is what decides the outcome — in other words, the scenario.
Why is gold rising?
When gold climbs, the short answer is usually one of three: real rates are falling or turning negative, money growth is accelerating, or a loss of confidence — geopolitics, banking stress, debt worries — is swelling both official and private demand.
A recent example: rates rose sharply in 2022, yet gold refused to collapse, because central banks bought a record ~1,082 tonnes that calendar year. The 1970s ran on a different engine — negative real rates and inflation — and 2008-11 on crisis plus money printing.
So the honest answer is never one headline. It's the particular mix of forces running in that period — which is exactly what a scenario tool lets you pull apart and test.
Do rate hikes hurt gold?
This comes down to the difference between nominal and real rates. What counts is not the number the central bank announces, but what is left of it after inflation. A 15% rate against 20% inflation is still a negative real return — gold is rarely hurt by that kind of "hike"; it is often supported.
Volcker (1980-82) is the clearest case in the record: real rates were forced deep into positive territory, and gold spent the next two decades going nowhere. The reverse happened in 2011 and again in 2020 — real rates went negative and gold peaked.
Roughly, rising real rates are a headwind and falling or negative real rates a tailwind. But it is not the only channel — record central-bank buying largely offset the 2022-24 rate shock.
Does gold protect against inflation?
Over very long horizons, yes: across centuries gold has held its purchasing power far better than paper currencies. But the protection is anything but smooth. Buy the 1980 peak and you waited roughly twenty years just to break even in real terms; buy in 2001 and you multiplied your money.
The reason is that the price depends not only on inflation but on real rates, demand and central-bank behaviour. When inflation is high but real rates are also high — as in the 1980s — gold can lose to inflation for years.
So gold hedges distrust in money more than it hedges inflation. What settles the outcome isn't inflation itself but how policy responds to it, and whether people still believe in the currency afterwards.
What does a strong dollar mean for gold?
Gold is priced in dollars worldwide. When the dollar strengthens against other currencies, gold becomes more expensive for everyone who doesn't earn in dollars; demand cools and the metal usually comes under pressure. The relationship is inverse — but far from one-for-one.
The exceptions matter. In a severe crisis both can climb together, because money runs to both at once. And where you live changes the answer: in most countries the local gold price is the dollar price times the exchange rate, so if your own currency is falling faster than gold is, gold still goes up for you — even on a day the dollar price drops.
So "the dollar is rising" tells you almost nothing on its own. Rising against what, and why — that's what sets the direction.
Why are central banks buying gold?
Two reasons, mainly: reserve diversification and sanctions risk. A country's foreign-exchange reserves mostly sit in other countries' bonds, and those can be frozen if it comes to that; gold in your own vault is nobody else's promise, and no one can cancel it from a distance. That's what the record buying since 2022 — over a thousand tonnes a year — is really about.
This demand builds a structural floor under the price: when it dips, a large and price-insensitive buyer is waiting. It is a major reason gold stayed resilient through the sharp rate rises of 2022-24.
Central-bank buying is a small slice of the gold traded each year, so it's easy to dismiss. But its influence shows at the lows: it's the bid that appears when everyone else is selling, which gives it more sway over the price than its size suggests.
Should I buy gold?
There is no single right answer to this question — and you should not trust any general article that tells you "buy" or "don't". A personal investment decision belongs with a licensed adviser who knows your circumstances. But there is a better version of the question: "In which worlds does gold do well or badly — and which world do I expect?"
Historically gold is strong when real rates are negative, money printing accelerates, confidence cracks, or central banks accumulate. It is weak under high positive real rates, a strengthening dollar and long stretches of stability. Choosing gold is really choosing a scenario.
That's the whole point of GoldSight. It won't tell you what to do; it shows you what your chosen scenario would mean for gold, how it gets there, and how wide the uncertainty is. The decision — and the responsibility — stays yours.
What is GoldSight?
GoldSight is a scenario tool for thinking about the gold price. It brings the main forces — the pace of money printing, real interest rates, investor demand and central-bank buying — into a single framework, and works out where a chosen scenario could lead over ten years.
What it does is not forecasting. The question is not what happens tomorrow, but what a given turn in the world would mean for gold. And the answer is a range, not a number.
So the real output is not the line down the middle but the shaded 90% confidence interval. The future is uncertain, and an honest model shows that uncertainty rather than hiding it: the width of the band measures how much the model admits it cannot know. The dashed lines offer a separate comparison — where the price would land if the average return of the past 10, 30 and 50 years simply carried on.
Every coefficient in the model rests either on published academic work or on measured historical data, and its limits are stated openly inside the app. Having been tested against past decades does not mean it knows the future. It is a tool for learning and thinking, not investment advice.
How to use GoldSight
Using GoldSight starts with forming a basic economic expectation about the future. The calculation runs off the live spot price at the top of the page; it updates automatically, but you can click on it and enter your own starting price.
The next step is to pick a ready-made narrative from the Future Scenarios panel. Each scenario stands for a particular macroeconomic setting — crisis, inflation, tight money and so on. The Scenario Intensity slider lets you strengthen or soften that setting. If you would rather split the ten-year horizon into separate stretches, the Add Period button assigns a different story to each one: a short crisis first, say, followed by a long recovery.
Reading the chart
When you look at the chart, the shaded area around the blue line matters more than the line itself. The future is uncertain and the model offers no single point forecast; the shaded area is the 90% confidence interval, where the price is expected to stay in nine years out of ten. A wider area means greater uncertainty in that scenario. The dashed lines are historical references: they show where the price would end up if the average returns of the past 10, 30 and 50 years simply carried on. To see the price stripped of inflation — in purchasing-power terms — use the NOMINAL / REAL switch above the chart.

If you would rather test your own expectations than use a ready-made scenario, open the Detailed Settings panel. There you can set the core parameters by hand: the pace of money printing, real interest rates, demand and dollar strength. The “Which event → which slider?” guide offers practical hints on how to move the sliders when a war breaks out or a new rate decision lands. Once you change the values by hand, the model no longer uses the archetype — it uses your numbers directly.
Historical backtest
To see how the model behaved during past crises and shocks, use this section. Driver Test takes the settled inflation and rate data of the period you choose, then asks you to move the demand slider to close the remaining price gap — which is how you gauge the scale of investor panic at the time. Narrative Test instead plays the period through as a scenario, on its events alone. Together they show how closely the model tracks reality when it is given the right story, and where it deliberately falls short.
How does the model actually work?
The backbone is simple accounting: gold's nominal return is inflation compounded with a "real premium". Inflation lifts the floor every year; the real question is whether gold finishes above or below that floor. The premium itself comes from a handful of channels you can measure.
First, the money channel: when the money supply grows faster than inflation plus the natural growth of the gold stock (about 1.6% a year), that gap feeds into gold over time. Second, real rates, which act as a one-time repricing — when the expected real rate moves, the price resets once, and a single point matters far more when rates are low than when they are high. Third, demand and fear: crisis buying hits hard but does not last, halving in roughly three years. Fourth, central-bank flows: quiet, capped, and persistent.
Sitting above all of it is a valuation anchor. If gold's inflation-adjusted price wanders far from its historical range, the model eases off the rise or props up the floor. In breakdown scenarios — heavy money printing, war — that upper brake is lifted on purpose, because the old range stops meaning anything in those worlds.
Every coefficient traces back to published research or measured history; none of them is tuned to flatter the output. The budget is five free parameters and only three are in use. The limits are stated just as plainly: the model will not manufacture speculative bubbles, its yearly resolution can hide what happened within a year, and in the 55-year chain test about a third of the deviation — sentiment, panic, central-bank surprises — is written off as unmodelable and left outside on purpose.
What each scenario does to the price
The scenarios come in three families. The first is monetary breakdown: Monetary Expansion, Stagflation, Geopolitical Shock, Sovereign Debt Crisis and De-Dollarization. What they share is money losing credibility — printing outpaces inflation, rates are pinned below it, or central banks move reserves out of dollars and into gold. Across a ten-year horizon the model gives this family clear real gains. De-Dollarization is the exception in how it gets there: not printing, but steady official buying that does not care about price.
The second family is tightening: Monetary Tightening and its extreme case, the Aggressive Rate Shock (historically the Volcker Shock). Real rates turn firmly positive, so cash starts paying you and holding gold starts costing you. It lands in two layers — a sharp one-time repricing when rates jump, then years of investors walking away. The archetype is 1980-82, which left gold flat for two decades.
The third family is crisis and mixed regimes. Financial Crisis spikes first on fear and falling rates, then fades as the panic burns off. Deflation is the odd world where gold plays a different role: cash gains value just by sitting there, and gold only jumps if the policy response arrives and the printing starts. Normal is what it sounds like — no dominant engine, price drifting along near inflation. The model is also honest about extremes: when price comes loose from economics altogether, it does not drag the average up — it widens the top of the band instead, because a jump like that is a tail risk, not a central expectation. Every card in the app carries its own short notes on what pushes the price up and what pushes it down.
Scenario summary
| Scenario | Typical inflation | Effect on gold |
|---|
| Baseline | 4-5% | Neutral |
| Monetary Expansion | ~9% | Up |
| Financial Crisis | ~2% | Up |
| Monetary Tightening | ~2-3% | Down |
| Geopolitical Shock | ~12% | Strongly up |
| Stagflation | ~9% | Strongly up |
| Deflation | negative | Mixed |
| De-Dollarization | ~8% | Strongly up |
| Aggressive Rate Shock | ~6-7% | Strongly down |
Inflation figures are each scenario’s typical assumption; the effect column shows the average direction of the rate-demand-dollar mix. The intensity slider can strengthen or soften it. Having more upward scenarios does not mean gold is more likely to rise; it only reflects that trust in money can erode in many ways (money printing, war, crisis, stagflation, de-dollarization). What pushes gold down is a single but powerful mechanism: the real interest rate turning clearly positive. This asymmetry is not a bias but the nature of the archetypes.
Setting the values yourself
The presets are archetypes, and the real world often lands somewhere between them. Custom mode lets you set the values by hand — Money Printing Pace, Real Interest Rate, Demand & Fear, and Dollar Strength. While it is on, Scenario Intensity switches off: you picked the numbers, so the model takes them exactly as given. The Dollar Strength slider sets how much the dollar gains (+) or loses (−) against other currencies each year, with 0 meaning flat. Since gold is priced in dollars, a strong dollar weighs on the price and a weak one supports it.
The practical recipes live in the guide card. War or a major crisis: push Demand & Fear to 3.5–5.0 and leave it there — the model lets fear fade on its own. Central banks buying more heavily: 1.2–1.5 is enough. A shift in rate expectations: set Real Interest Rate to the expected rate minus expected inflation, and if the market doesn't believe the announced rate, use the rate it does believe. Inflation expectations on the move: slide Money Printing Pace — anything well above the usual ~5% pushes inflation, and gold, higher.
Two thresholds are worth knowing. A printing pace above 8% counts as a breakdown scenario, and the historical valuation brake comes off — the old range no longer applies in that world. And pushing Demand & Fear past 3.5 will not inflate the average; it opens the top of the band instead, which is the honest way to show tail risk. Push the extremes as hard as you like — that is what the tool is for — just read the answer as a range, never as a number.
How does the model build nominal returns?
The model builds nominal returns using the Fisher relation. It takes its name from Irving Fisher, who described how nominal interest, real interest, and inflation relate to one another. In its simplest form, it is an addition: nominal ≈ real + inflation. The model uses the multiplicative form instead, so that (1 + nominal) = (1 + real) × (1 + inflation).
The gap between the two is small when inflation is low, but it widens as inflation rises. In a year with 15% inflation, the additive form gets the return wrong, because inflation compounds the real premium as well. The multiplicative form accounts for that.
The setup has a second consequence: inflation and the real premium are calculated separately, then combined. Inflation lifts the floor under the price, while the real premium decides whether gold finishes above or below it. If they were folded into a single return figure, you would lose track of where each effect came from as you switched scenarios. The Fisher relation is an architectural choice here — it was not fitted to the data, but chosen because it is the economically sound way to combine the two.
Why is the interval wider on the upside?
If the edges of the confidence interval were drawn from a normal distribution, the upper and lower bounds would be symmetric — but gold does not behave that way. When markets are calm it trades in a narrow range; in a crisis it spikes. There is no mirror image on the downside: gold rarely halves in a single year.
To account for that asymmetry the model applies a correction known as the Cornish-Fisher expansion. It takes the skewness and tail thickness of the distribution and shifts the edges of the interval to match. Both values come from the scenario itself: the stronger the demand, the more pronounced they become. So as fear rises, the upper bound opens faster than the lower one.
One distinction is worth holding onto. In panic scenarios the model does not drag the median upward; the median keeps coming from its own channels. What changes is the shape of the uncertainty. "The odds of an upside surprise went up" is not the same claim as "the price will rise" — the upper bound is a limit on what is plausible, not a forecast.
